After offering a persuasive prayer for deliverance, David receives assurance that “the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.”—Psalm 6:8,9. He was petitioning the Lord to release the divine judgment that had been administered through corrective discipline. It is a relief to the returning backslider that “whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.” This consideration led me to frame the following hymn. [2 June 2012]

A suitable tune might be that composed by Winfield Weeden, usually sung to the hymn, “I Surrender All.”

The Lord is Near

The psalmist cries out in desperation, “O LORD, how long? Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.”—Psalm 6:3,4. These are the words of David after he had been brought to a point of submission by the chastisement of God. Part of the Lord’s corrective discipline included a sense of His absence from David’s life. Thus, through the deprivation of God’s presence, he was made to thirst for the living waters. It was this experience in the life of a backslider that brought to mind the following lines.
