Gospel Standard 1886:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Thanksgivings to our gracious Lord\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who sent thee forth to preach his word,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who made thee faithful, made thee bold\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His glorious gospel to unfold.<\/p>\n

Who, out of weakness, makes thee strong\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To speed the gospel plough along;<\/p>\n

Who richly still supplies thy need,<\/p>\n

His weary saints to tend and feed.<\/p>\n

Dear man of God! we love thee well,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yea, more than many words can tell;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

‘Tis for thy Master’s sake we love,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Which does our heavenly calling prove.<\/p>\n

Oft, when we meet for praise and prayer,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Jesus Christ himself is there,<\/p>\n

We feel our hearts to God ascend<\/p>\n

To bless thee to thy journey’s end.<\/p>\n

We tell him how his word we hear\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(The precious gospel sweet and clear)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From thy own lips, and then implore\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More blessings from his heav’nly store.<\/p>\n

We ask him to bedew thy soul,<\/p>\n

And all thy rising fears control,<\/p>\n

To cheer thy heart when thou art sad,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And speak the word to make thee glad.<\/p>\n

And that he hears our prayer we know\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And on thy soul his gifts bestow,<\/p>\n

For when th’ appointed hour comes round\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His servant at his post is found.<\/p>\n

He tells us then of sovereign grace\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For fallen sons of Adam’s race;<\/p>\n

Of Jesus’ precious love and blood,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And how for us the Surety stood.<\/p>\n

Tells how the Father and the Son,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And Holy Ghost joined all in one,<\/p>\n

To save the church from death and hell,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In that grand covenant ordered well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Describes the wand’rings of his sheep,<\/p>\n

And what it is their feet doth keep,<\/p>\n

And how, through grace, they persevere,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And bids them still “be of good cheer.”<\/p>\n

His theme is Jesus Christ the Lord,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mighty God, the Eternal Word,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As God and man, born to redeem\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All that Jehovah chose in him.<\/p>\n

He preaches God’s electing love\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(That bulwark hell can ne’er remove)<\/p>\n

Based on th’ eternal, firm decrees<\/p>\n

Of Him who formed earth, skies, and seas.<\/p>\n

He shows, by God’s most Holy Word,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our lives should with true faith accord,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Agreeing thus with one who said<\/p>\n

That “faith without good works is dead.”<\/p>\n

Thus babes, young men, and fathers too,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Good food receive and strength renew;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst those “without” the gospel hear,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So from their blood God’s servant’s clear.<\/p>\n

O gracious Lord, do still impart\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fresh life, fresh vigour to his heart\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That he may still the trumpet blow\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst thou hast work for him below.<\/p>\n
