{"id":7517,"date":"2021-10-21T01:05:40","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T01:05:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.baptists.net\/history\/?p=7517"},"modified":"2023-05-17T07:09:08","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T07:09:08","slug":"a-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.baptists.net\/history\/2021\/10\/a-dream\/","title":{"rendered":"A Dream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u201cAnd they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.\u201d\u2014Genesis 37:12<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"drop-cap\">Reader,\u00a0I&#8217;ll not take up much time<br \/>\nTo apologise, in prose or rhyme;<br \/>\nMy dream, such as it is, you see;<br \/>\nWhate&#8217;er&#8217;s amiss belongs to me.<br \/>\nNo doubt some men will say, &#8220;&#8216;Tis naught,<br \/>\nAnd with enthusiasm fraught;&#8221;<br \/>\nWhile others will it much esteem,<br \/>\nAnd nay that I the truth, did dream.<br \/>\nPerhaps &#8217;twill find a welcome place,<br \/>\nIn such as live on sovereign grace;<br \/>\nIf so, then am I quite content,<br \/>\nNor shall I count my time ill spent;<br \/>\nBut such as live on wit and self,<br \/>\nWill hardly have it on their shelf,<br \/>\nBut with a cheerful mind attempt<br \/>\nTo hold it up to vain contempt.<br \/>\nWell, be it so; I rest secure;<br \/>\nTheir smiles would not my soul allure,<br \/>\nNor will their frowns my heart distress.<br \/>\nNor make me dream a moment less.<br \/>\nI leave it in Jehovah&#8217;s hand,<br \/>\nTo sink or swim, to fall or stand;<br \/>\nAnd if &#8217;tis with his blessing crown&#8217;d,<br \/>\nThe glory shall to him redound.<br \/>\nOnce, as I slept, I dream&#8217;d a dream,<br \/>\nAnd though to some it strange may seem,<br \/>\nTo me &#8217;twas clear as day;<br \/>\nMethought I saw a man in chains,<br \/>\nWho seem&#8217;d deranged, or rack&#8217;d with pains,<br \/>\nWhich made me cry, and say\u2014<br \/>\n&#8220;What wretched mortal&#8217;s that, alack!<br \/>\nWith such a load upon his back?<br \/>\nHow dreadful are his sighs!<br \/>\nMy soul&#8217;s amazed, anxious to know<br \/>\nThe cause of all his grief and woe,<br \/>\nAnd what&#8217;s his enterprise.&#8221;<br \/>\nWhile I was musing thus, he spoke,<br \/>\nAnd from his soul this language broke:<br \/>\n&#8220;The wrath, the wrath to come!<br \/>\nWhat can I do, where can I flee?<br \/>\nMy soul is lost eternally;<br \/>\nDamnation is my doom!<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ve sinn&#8217;d with heart, and lip, and tongue,<br \/>\nHave mock&#8217;d Jehovah in my song,<br \/>\nDespised his holy name;<br \/>\nHave hated all his righteous ways,<br \/>\nIn sin have spent my nights and days,<br \/>\nAnd gloried in my shame.<br \/>\n&#8220;But now I find the Lord is just,<br \/>\nAnd by his holy law I&#8217;m curst,<br \/>\nAnd sentenced to despair;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve tried to purify my heart,<br \/>\nAnd cause this burden to depart,<br \/>\nBut, ah! I sink with fear.<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ve tried, and tried, and tried again.<br \/>\nBut all my efforts prove in vain;<br \/>\nMy guilt does more abound;<br \/>\nMy soul keeps sinking night and day,<br \/>\nNor can I hope to find the way<br \/>\nWhere mercy may be found.&#8221;<br \/>\nNor did he speak like one in jest;<br \/>\nDistraction heaved his troubled breast,<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;m lost,&#8221; he cried, &#8220;I&#8217;m lost.&#8221;<br \/>\nAt length a ray of light broke in,<br \/>\nWhich made him cry, &#8220;O sin, O sin!<br \/>\nLord, save, or die I must.<br \/>\n&#8220;Lord, save, O save, a rebel base,<br \/>\nOr I must sink in deep disgrace,<br \/>\nAnd thy just wrath endure;<br \/>\nA sinner I, justly condemn&#8217;d,<br \/>\nWhose carnal hopes are at an end,<br \/>\nNow knock at mercy&#8217;s door.&#8221;<br \/>\nI heard him cry with all his strength;<br \/>\nA noble person came at length,<br \/>\nIn garments white as snow;<br \/>\nWhose heart was fill&#8217;d with tenderness,<br \/>\nAsk&#8217;d, with a smile upon his face,<br \/>\n&#8220;What wilt thou have me do?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Who art thou, Lord?&#8221; the rebel cried;<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m Jesus, who for sinners died,&#8221;<br \/>\nThe Saviour soon replied;<br \/>\n&#8220;I heard thee cry, and came apace,<br \/>\nDetermined thee to save by grace,<br \/>\nAnd thou shalt be ray bride.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;The blessing is too great for me;<br \/>\nI cannot of it worthy be;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m vile from head to feet;<br \/>\nMy sins like mountains on me lie;<br \/>\nI feel and know I ought to die;<br \/>\nMy guilt&#8217;s immensely great.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;I know thou art a sinner base,<br \/>\nBut boundless is my power and grace;<br \/>\nThy cause I make my own.<br \/>\nFor thee I shed my precious blood,<br \/>\nAnd for thee as thy Surety stood;<br \/>\nThy sins on me were thrown.<br \/>\n&#8220;The vengeance due to thee I bore,<br \/>\nHave fully cancell&#8217;d the long score,<br \/>\nAnd made an end of sin.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve magnified the righteous law,<br \/>\nIn me it cannot find a flaw,<br \/>\nNor bring thee guilty in.&#8221;<br \/>\nThus said, the cross appear&#8217;d in sight,<br \/>\nAt which his burden took its flight,<br \/>\nAnd down it roll&#8217;d apace;<br \/>\nA fountain then stood full in view,<br \/>\nAnd Jesus plunged him in it too,<br \/>\nAnd wash&#8217;d him from disgrace.<br \/>\nUpon his hand he put a ring,<br \/>\nAdorn&#8217;d him like a noble king.<br \/>\nWith righteousness divine;<br \/>\nEnrich&#8217;d him with his heavenly grace;<br \/>\nHeal&#8217;d all his wounds, and made his face<br \/>\nRefill gently to shine.<br \/>\nHis guilt was taken from his sight;<br \/>\nHis soul was lill&#8217;d with endless light;<br \/>\nAnd now I heard him sing:<br \/>\n&#8220;Salvation must be free indeed.<br \/>\nSince I from sin and guilt am freed;<br \/>\nJesus is just the thing.<br \/>\n&#8220;He saved me from the lowest hell;<br \/>\nMy soul, with holy wonder tell<br \/>\nWhat he has done for thee;<br \/>\nArise, arise, and bless his name,<br \/>\nAnd spread abroad his mighty fame;<br \/>\nTell how he set thee free.<br \/>\n&#8220;Dear Jesus, thou art ever mine,<br \/>\nAnd I am ever, ever thine,<br \/>\nThe purchase of thy blood;<br \/>\nO may I love thee and adore;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve all in thee; I want no more;<br \/>\nThou art my Lord and God.<br \/>\n&#8220;My portion is the King of kings;<br \/>\nIn him are all my living springs;<br \/>\nOf him alone I&#8217;ll boast;<br \/>\nNor world, nor flesh, nor hell, nor sin,<br \/>\nMy heart from Christ my Lord shall win;<br \/>\nIn him I&#8217;ll ever trust.<br \/>\n&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing on this earthly ball<br \/>\nThat can or shall e&#8217;er charm my soul,<br \/>\nOr shall my mind perplex;<br \/>\nIf aught attempt to gain a place<br \/>\nWithin the temple of his grace,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll break their hateful nocks.\u201d<br \/>\n(The pronoun I began to swell,)<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll run in spite of earth or hell,<br \/>\nNor death nor danger fear;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll keep from sin and every thrall<br \/>\nNor listen to the stranger&#8217;s call,<br \/>\nNor fall into her snare.<br \/>\n&#8220;I&#8217;ll watch, I&#8217;ll pray, I&#8217;ll fight, I&#8217;ll win,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll overcome the world and sin,<br \/>\nNor one shall me excel;<br \/>\nYoung men and fathers soon shall see<br \/>\nHow fast I grow, and learn of me<br \/>\nWhen 1 my victories tell.&#8221;<br \/>\nHe promised thus, and took his walk;<br \/>\nI listen&#8217;d hard to hear him talk,<br \/>\nAnd watch&#8217;d him every step;<br \/>\nHe thought himself secure indeed,<br \/>\nBut soon, for want of taking heed,<br \/>\nHe fell into a trap.<br \/>\nDarkness surrounded him in haste,<br \/>\nAnd soon he found a dreadful nest<br \/>\nOf vipers in the place;<br \/>\nEach hissing with infernal spite<br \/>\nAgainst the God of pure delight,<br \/>\nThe God of truth and grace.<br \/>\nSome sturdy rogues at once appear&#8217;d;<br \/>\nHis soul to death they almost fear&#8217;d;<br \/>\n&#8220;My hope,&#8221; said he, &#8220;is vain.&#8221;<br \/>\nWith this one bolder villain cried,<br \/>\n&#8220;Destroy thyself, whate&#8217;er betide,<br \/>\nFor God does thee disdain.<br \/>\n&#8220;If Jesus were thy friend indeed,<br \/>\nHe would arise thy cause to plead,<br \/>\nAnd pity thy complaint;<br \/>\nA vile impostor thou hast been.&#8221;\u2014<br \/>\nAnd now, the dreadful stench of sin<br \/>\nRose up and made him faint.<br \/>\nHe struggled hard for life and breath,<br \/>\nBut all appear&#8217;d to threaten death,<br \/>\nAnd horror fill&#8217;d his soul:<br \/>\nThis evil heart did now disclose<br \/>\nTen thousand, twice ten thousand foes,<br \/>\nNor could he them control.<br \/>\nHis fears prevail\u2019d, his faith gave way,<br \/>\nAnd when he durst attempt to pray,<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8216;Tis sin,&#8221; cried they, &#8220;&#8217;tis sin;<br \/>\nJehovah hates to hear thy voice;<br \/>\nTo hell he&#8217;ll send thee in a trice;<br \/>\nThen hold thy impious din.&#8221;<br \/>\nSo speechless for a while he lay.<br \/>\nAnon I thought I heard one say,<br \/>\n&#8220;In trouble call on me;<br \/>\nIn every clay of trouble call,<br \/>\nI will deliver thee from thrall,<br \/>\nThou shalt my glory see.<br \/>\n&#8220;My name is God; arise and cry,<br \/>\nAnd thou shalt find me ever nigh<br \/>\nTo help in time of need.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe man now cried, as was most fit,<br \/>\n&#8220;Lord, save me from corruption&#8217;s pit;<br \/>\nDeliver me with speed!<br \/>\n&#8220;I feel myself a worm at best;<br \/>\nWith power divine I would be blest;<br \/>\nLord Jesus, quickly come.&#8221;<br \/>\nThen Jesus raised him up in haste,<br \/>\nAnd that ho might his goodness taste,<br \/>\nHe took him to his home.<br \/>\nNow as I saw him in my dream,<br \/>\n(For still I kept my eye on him)<br \/>\nAnd watch&#8217;d his entrance there;<br \/>\nThe house with radiant splendour shone;<br \/>\nOn rock &#8217;twas built with polish&#8217;d stone,<br \/>\n&#8216;Mid pastures green and fair.<br \/>\nCelestial music now I heard;<br \/>\nA banquet rich I saw prepared;<br \/>\n(For all did open seem;)<br \/>\nAnd while the Lord with smiling face,<br \/>\nShow&#8217;d him the glories of the place;<br \/>\nI wish&#8217;d myself with him.<br \/>\nHere did the rebel bend his knee,<br \/>\n\u201cO, Saviour, Saviour, pardon me,<br \/>\nA base ungrateful wretch;<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve sinn&#8217;d against my God and Friend;<br \/>\nMy pride had well-nigh been my end,<br \/>\nIt plunged me in the ditch.&#8221;<br \/>\nAgainst vain self he now was turn&#8217;d ;<br \/>\nInstead of crowning it, he mourn&#8217;d,<br \/>\nAnd thus began to speak:<br \/>\n&#8220;I feel I cannot stand an hour,<br \/>\nUnless upheld by mighty power;<br \/>\nI&#8217;m helpless, vain, and weak.<br \/>\n\u201cLord, keep me from the world and sin,<br \/>\nFrom foes without and worse within,<br \/>\nFrom devils clothed in white:<br \/>\nO make me well my vileness know,<br \/>\nAnd keep me very, very low.<br \/>\nAnd humble in thy sight.<br \/>\n&#8220;Bless me with prudence, care, and skill;<br \/>\nTeach me to know and do thy will;<br \/>\nMy pride and lust subdue;<br \/>\nDear Jesus, make me watch and pray;<br \/>\nNor let me ever run astray,<br \/>\nNor vanity pursue.<br \/>\n\u201cO may I in thy grace he strong;<br \/>\nUphold me as I walk along;<br \/>\nPreserve me night and day!<br \/>\nMy standing fast is, Lord, in thee:<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve tried myself, and plainly see<br \/>\nHow soon I fall a prey.<br \/>\n\u201cO make me faithful unto death;<br \/>\nBless me with wisdom, love, and faith,<br \/>\nAnd every needful good;<br \/>\nWith heart and soul may I depend<br \/>\nOn Jesus, as my God and Friend,<br \/>\nAnd feel his cleansing blood.<br \/>\n&#8220;A pensioner I fain would be.<br \/>\nAnd sensibly depend on thee<br \/>\nFor life and all beside;<br \/>\nDear Jesus, grant me my request:<br \/>\nO may I lean upon thy breast,<br \/>\nAs thy beloved bride!<br \/>\n&#8220;Sweet Jesus, what can I have more?<br \/>\nIn thee I have a living store;<br \/>\nLord, take me to the mount;<br \/>\nHelp me to walk round Zion&#8217;s hill,<br \/>\nAnd mark her walls and bulwarks still,<br \/>\nAnd all her towers count.<br \/>\n&#8220;Unfold the blessings of thy grace,<br \/>\nAnd let me often see thy face,<br \/>\nAnd hear thy loving voice.<br \/>\nDraw me with cords of love, and then<br \/>\nMy soul to thee shall swiftly run,<br \/>\nAnd in thy name rejoice.<br \/>\n&#8220;Thou hast redeem&#8217;d my soul with blood;<br \/>\nI would, dear Lord, thou know&#8217;st I would,<br \/>\nCast all my cares on thee:<br \/>\nLord, keep me in the trying hour,<br \/>\nNor let me fall by Satan&#8217;s power,<br \/>\nBut thy salvation see.<br \/>\n&#8220;A helpless worm on thee I fall;<br \/>\nThou know&#8217;st I have no strength at all;<br \/>\nO leave me not alone;<br \/>\nMy heart deceitful is as hell,<br \/>\nNor can I half its baseness tell.<br \/>\nNor its rebellion shun.<br \/>\n&#8220;Compell&#8217;d I am to rest in thee,<br \/>\nFor, Lord, I daily feel and see<br \/>\nNo hand can help but thine;<br \/>\nO guide me with thy counsel here;<br \/>\nGive me that love that casts out fear,<br \/>\nAnd let thy will be mine.<br \/>\n&#8220;And when I reach the realms of bliss,<br \/>\nTo dwell where perfect pleasure is,<br \/>\nAnd in thy beauties shine,<br \/>\n&#8220;With all the blood-bought throng to sing<br \/>\nThe honours of my God and King,<br \/>\nThe glory shall be thine.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;In me,&#8221; the Saviour then replied,<br \/>\n&#8220;In me alone thou art justified;<br \/>\nIn me thou art complete;<br \/>\nI am the Lord, thy righteousness;<br \/>\nA fulness of immortal grace<br \/>\nDwells in me, thee to treat.<br \/>\n&#8220;Behold the feast my love has made;<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s milk and honey, wine and bread,<br \/>\nWith fatted calf and lamb;<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s all a hungry soul can need,<br \/>\nAnd from all charges it is freed,<br \/>\nAnd ever shall remain.<br \/>\n&#8220;Eat, O beloved, take thy fill;<br \/>\nTis free for thee; whoever will<br \/>\nMay here have free access;<br \/>\nBehold, with wonder and delight,<br \/>\nMy house is open day and night;<br \/>\nThe banquet is of grace.<br \/>\nIf aught should say thou art not fit,<br \/>\nThou art too vile with me to sit,<br \/>\nAnd feast on such repast;<br \/>\nRemember, I have made thee free;<br \/>\nThy worthiness is all in me;<br \/>\nThen hold thy title fast.<br \/>\n&#8220;If fruitful thou would&#8217;st wish to be,<br \/>\nBy love and faith abide in me;<br \/>\nI am the living vine;<br \/>\nThe branch that does not in me grow,<br \/>\nNo clusters of good works can show,<br \/>\nNo fruits of love divine.<br \/>\n&#8220;&#8216;Tis thine to live by faith in me,<br \/>\nAnd though thou canst not always see<br \/>\nWhat I design to do,<br \/>\nAgainst hope to believe in hope,<br \/>\nNor unto carnal reason stoop,<br \/>\nBecomes my favour&#8217;d few.<br \/>\n&#8220;Lean on me as thy staff and stay,<br \/>\nIn health or sickness, night or day,<br \/>\nNor trust to self an hour.<br \/>\nI am thy strength and safety too,<br \/>\nAnd I will surely bring thee through,<br \/>\nBy my almighty power.<br \/>\n&#8220;Watch thou against, the Babel\u2014I&#8217;s,<br \/>\nOr thou wilt soon to thy surprise<br \/>\nIn some fresh net be caught;<br \/>\nBe constant at my throne of grace,<br \/>\nAnd I will help thee in distress,<br \/>\nBut will for help be sought.<br \/>\n&#8220;Thy foes are very great indeed;<br \/>\nSatan, with his infernal breed,<br \/>\nAnd the old man of sin,<br \/>\nEach will attempt thee to devour,<br \/>\nAnd watch for some unguarded hour,<br \/>\nTo bring thee guilty in.<br \/>\n&#8220;Yet, fear not thou, though but a worm,<br \/>\nI am thy refuge from the storm,<br \/>\nThy shelter and defence;<br \/>\nI am thy shield and buckler bright,<br \/>\nAnd thou shalt put thy foes to Might,<br \/>\nTheir fiery darts I&#8217;ll quench.<br \/>\n&#8220;Let truth thy only girdle be;<br \/>\nStand to thy post, nor dare to flee:<br \/>\nOn sovereign grace rely;<br \/>\nNor men, nor devils, world, nor sin,<br \/>\nNor powers without, nor powers within,<br \/>\nShall ever thee destroy.<br \/>\n&#8220;With courage, then, meet every foe;<br \/>\nThe victory&#8217;s thine, find thou shalt know<br \/>\nSalvation is complete.<br \/>\nI am thy Captain, Head, and King,<br \/>\nAnd I will thee to glory bring,<br \/>\nAnd all thy foes defeat.<br \/>\n&#8220;Only believe, and rest on me,<br \/>\nAnd thou shalt my salvation see<br \/>\nIn every new distress.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll work in thee to will and do,<br \/>\nAnd I&#8217;ll have all the glory too,<br \/>\nFor mine is all the grace.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Dear Jesus, keep me near thy side,<br \/>\nNor let me stray, whate&#8217;er betide,<br \/>\nNor after strangers run;<br \/>\nHelp me thy goodness to proclaim<br \/>\nAnd I will tell the blind and lame<br \/>\nWhat thou for me hast done.<br \/>\n&#8220;Come, sinners, in the Lord confide;<br \/>\nBehold his bleeding hands and side;<br \/>\nHe stands with open arms.<br \/>\nThe vilest wretch who trusts in him,<br \/>\nHe&#8217;ll save from Satan, wrath, and sin,<br \/>\nAnd guard him from all harms.<br \/>\n&#8220;Ye need not stay your hearts to mend,<br \/>\nNor think your works with, his to blend;<br \/>\nYour money he&#8217;ll disdain;<br \/>\nA perfect Saviour is the Lord;<br \/>\nRely upon his gracious word,<br \/>\nAnd you shall heaven obtain.<br \/>\n&#8220;No fleshly works can pave a way<br \/>\nTo mansions of eternal day,<br \/>\nNor God&#8217;s rich favour gain:<br \/>\nFor be their number more or less,<br \/>\nAll that are saved are saved by grace,<br \/>\nThrough faith in Jesus&#8217; name.<br \/>\n&#8220;And if by grace, how vain to try<br \/>\nImmortal happiness to buy,<br \/>\nWith works of righteousness!<br \/>\nYe mourners! haste to Jesus&#8217; feet,<br \/>\nAnd there you&#8217;ll find all things complete,<br \/>\nJust suited to your case.<br \/>\n&#8220;That Christ is all, my soul knows well,<br \/>\nand therefore must his wonders tell;<br \/>\nHis mercy still I prove;<br \/>\nFor I&#8217;m a sinner vile and base,<br \/>\nYet I &#8216;m a sinner saved by grace,<br \/>\nThrough faith that works by love.&#8221;<br \/>\nThus were his lofty looks brought down;<br \/>\nJesus (not self) must wear the crown;<br \/>\n(Great I&#8217;s are sure to fall;)<br \/>\nFor whoso on the Lord depends,<br \/>\nShall find his counsel ever stands;<br \/>\nHe&#8217;ll save thorn when they call.<br \/>\nStill keeping him within my sight,<br \/>\nI saw him now, with great delight,<br \/>\nThe narrow way pursue:<br \/>\nIn measure, wean&#8217;d from self and sin,<br \/>\nBy faith he walk&#8217;d, by faith he ran,<br \/>\nAnd kept the prize in view.<br \/>\nBy faith he entered into rest,<br \/>\nSweetly reclined on Jesus&#8217;
