6 Apollos Outgrew His Confessional Statement
Apollos came to a saving knowledge of Christ early in his life. Having come under the gospel ministry of John the Baptist, he followed in the ordinance of baptism, instructed in the ways of the Lord by the teaching of John. He became an itinerate teacher of the gospel, traveling from place to place, teaching in the synagogues and conversing with local communities. Around the year 56AD, he arrived in Ephesus where he set upon his usual routine of ministry. At that time, Aquila and Priscilla, a Christian couple who were close friends and helpers of the Apostle Paul, had already organized a church in their house. Upon hearing that Apollos, the famed Bible teacher, had arrived in their city, they attended the local synagogue on the day he was scheduled to teach. They soon realized, while Apollos was a gifted teacher and familiar with the Scriptures, yet his understanding of free grace and the work of Christ was in want of learning. After the meeting, they invited him to their home where a friendship was forged. It was in the course of that friendship, Aquila and Priscilla became teachers of the gospel to Apollos, instructing him in the way of the Lord more perfectly. Apollos was a sponge, soaking up the gospel of free grace and receiving instructions on the deeper things of God. Having outgrown the basic teachings given him by John the Baptist, he climbed into the advanced teachings of the Apostle Paul, going forth in his ministry with a clearer and more matured understanding of the gospel of Christ. Every believer in Christ should expect, at different intervals of his/her journey with the Lord, to outgrow the clothing of one confessional statement and climbing into that of another. It is called growth in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. This study explores the grace journey of Apollos.
