AN ORDER OF SERVICE FOR DIVINE WORSHIP; DESIGNED FOR PRIVATE DEVOTIONS, FAMILY GATHERINGS AND CHURCH MEETINGS.

A Call To Worship

It is written in Psalm 91:1,2: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”

Scripture Reading—Romans 6:1-23

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Testimonies

In Psalm 96:2-4, King David explains why God’s people should show forth His salvation from day to day—”Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people. For the Lord is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods.” Let us, therefore, share a testimony of Lord’s greatness.

This sermon addresses the following points:
• Linking the enmity between the seed of Satan and that of the woman (Genesis 3), with the enmity between the old and new natures residing in the soul of a regenerate sinner
• Distinguishing between the first and second births, as expounded by Christ in John 3
• Examining the origin and nature of the first birth—Genesis 1 and 2, Psalm 51, Jeremiah 17, Matthew 15, Galatians 5, Romans 7 and 8, John 6
• Examining the origin and nature of the second birth—Ephesians 2 and 4, John 15, 1 John 3
• Showing the distinction between the old and new natures
• Pointing out the delusion and false profession of unregenerate sinners when they fail to distinguish between the old and new natures
• Pointing out the confusion and intense frustration of regenerate sinners when they fail to distinguish between the old and new natures
• Explaining the folly of “progressive sanctification” and its ill affects upon a believer’s walk with the Lord
• Showing the enmity that exists between the old and new natures
• Several texts are read against the backdrop of the foregoing teachings, shedding light on the nature of the believer’s sanctification (growth in grace)—Galatians 5, Colossians 3, Romans 6 and 7
• Highlighting the significance of a believer’s inner conflict between the old and new natures, as evidence that he/she has been born again, and is therefore numbered among God’s elect people

If we be partakers of the divine nature, then we are as green olive trees in the house of God. May we trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. May we praise the Lord for ever, because He doeth all things well. May we wait on His name, for it is good before His saints. Amen.

Guidance Notes
[1] The proceedings of the worship service should be conducted by one person. If it is a family gathering, then the head of home (Father or Mother) should assume the leadership. If it is a church gathering, then the Pastor, Deacon or an elder should assume the oversight. If it is a gathering with friends (peers), then one of these persons should take the lead. It is the responsibility of the leader to maintain order and discipline during the meeting. This important position should not be delegated to a person on the basis of his/her musical ability. Just because someone has a good voice or can play an instrument does not qualify him/her to lead a worship service.
[2] The leader should set a time for the worship service, making it known to all who will be attending. The leader should ensure the worship room is clean and clear of anything that might distract. The leader should give a five minute notice before the service begins. At the scheduled time, the leader should start by calling the group to worship.
[3] Children of all ages should be attending the family and/or church gathering. It is the responsibility of the parents to train their children how to be respectful and attentive during a worship service. The leader should ensure all toys and devices are put out of sight. It sends the wrong message to young children if they are allowed to play during a worship service. The leader (and group) should exercise patience and gentleness if some of the children are a little disruptive. In certain circumstances, one of the parents may need to take the child out of the room until discipline of the child is regained.
[4] Here is an example on how the proceedings should go:
• A CALL TO WORSHIP
“Let us worship almighty God, by standing together and singing our opening hymn-‘Name of the Hymn’.”
• SING OPENING HYMN
Read the statement after the opening hymn, under ‘A Call To Worship’.
“Let us stand together as we sing our first hymn—‘Name of the Hymn’.”
• SING FIRST HYMN
“You may be seated. Let us continue to worship the Lord by hearing what He has to say to us from the Holy Scriptures. Please turn in your Bible to the (Scripture Text) and I will read from the opening verse.” The Scripture should be read by the family or church leader.
• READ THE SCRIPTURE
“And may the Lord add a double blessing upon the reading of His Word. Let us now come before the Lord in prayer.” Although the opening prayer may be delegated to someone else in the group, it is a good policy for the family or church leader to assume this responsibility.
• THE OPENING PRAYER
“Let us stand together and continue to worship the Lord by singing our second hymn—‘Name of the Hymn.’”
• SING SECOND HYMN
“You may be seated.” Read the statement under “Testimonies”.
• SHARE TESTIMONIES
“Let us stand together and continue to worship the Lord by singing our third hymn—‘Name of the Hymn’.”
• SING THIRD HYMN
“You may be seated. We will now come under the teachings of God’s Word. Let us be attentive to the gospel minister. He has prepared food for our souls. May it please the Lord to edify us in the gospel.”
• WATCH THE SERMON
“Let us stand together and continue to worship the Lord by singing our fourth hymn—‘Name of the Hymn’.”
• SING FOURTH HYMN
“You may be seated. Let us close our meeting in prayer.” It is a good policy to delegate this responsibility to another leader in the group. For instance, if the father is leading the family worship, then he may ask the mother to close in prayer; or, if the Pastor is leading the church worship, then he may ask a Deacon or an elder to close in prayer.
• LEAD IN THE CLOSING PRAYER
“Before we are dismissed, let us stand together once more and sing a final hymn—‘Name of the Hymn’.”
• SING CLOSING HYMN
