We have in this chapter the Lord instructing Noah to make final preparations for entering the ark, as the rains will begin to fall after seven days. Noah with his family obey the Lord, and on the seventh day are shut into the ark by God. After forty days and forty nights of rain, the waters fill the earth covering the highest mountains. The waters remain upon the earth for one hundred and fifty days (five months), during which time the ark (without rudder, sail or anchor) aimlessly floats upon the waves. We have in this chapter the Lord's assessment of the wickedness of the human race, together with His pronouncement of judgment. The life and testimony of Noah is singled out as an instance of God's saving grace. Noah was a just man (freely justified by the redemption that is in Christ Jesus); perfect in his generations (living godly in Christ Jesus in the midst of a crooked society); walking with God (enjoying blessed fellowship and communion with the Lord); obedient to the Lord (following the Lord's instructions, even when the adverse circumstances make no sense). 

We have in this chapter a catalogue of ten generations, represented by one man per generation, covering a total period of 1,656 years. All ten men were the ancestors of the Messiah. Among them are Jared, the second oldest man in history and father of Enoch; Methuselah, the oldest man in history and son of Enoch; Enoch, the man who lived the shortest time in his generations and did not see death, for God took him immediately to heaven. Although Noah is introduced at the end of the chapter, Enoch is the man who is given prominence, he being a regenerate sinner, walking with the Lord and preaching the gospel of Christ.
