    Redeeming The Time

    January 6, 2025 /

Light and life are communicated from Jesus to his members, not merely to till their heads with gospel truths, as matters of speculation, or to make them fluent talkers about religion, but chiefly to affect their hearts, renew their minds, and cause them to be close and consistent walkers with Jesus. Without this we only seem to be religious; we deceive ourselves, and our religion is vain. We cannot stand approved in the sight of God, before men, nor to our own consciences. ‘The wise man’s eyes are in his head;’ he looks around him and sees the evil of sin, the vanity of this present world, that its gay pleasures, alluring pastimes, bewitching diversions, are the gilded bait of the god of this world,…

Expository Notes On Psalm 37:1-7: Keeping The Boundary

    December 9, 2024 /

Notes On The Structure 1. It is believed David wrote the Psalm a few years before his death—“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” (Ps 37:25) Upon reflection in his old age, he explored the question, Why does God allow the wicked to prosper while leaving His people in difficult circumstances? 2. Within the first seven verses, David gives a twofold description of the problem (1,2 and 7b) with a single statement on a prescribed solution (3-7a).  3. The problem (1,2 and 7b) is not the prosperity of the wicked, but the discontentment and covetousness of the Lord’s people. David points out the obvious—the prosperity of the wicked is short-lived.

How Do We Discern The Lord’s Guidance?

    October 31, 2024 /

It is well for those who are duly sensible of their own weakness and fallibility, and of the difficulties with which they are surrounded in life, that the Lord has promised to guide his people with his eye, and to cause them to hear a word be hind them, saying, "This is the way, walk ye in it," when they are in danger of turning aside either to the right hand or to the left. For this purpose he has given us the written word to be a lamp to our feet, and encouraged us to pray for the teaching of his Holy Spirit, that we may rightly understand and apply it. It is, however, too often seen that many widely deviate from the path…

The Lord’s Way In The Sea

    October 9, 2024 /

This was a discovery experimentally made and feelingly expressed by David in a time of great trouble. This trouble was very complicated. We learn from the second verse of the Psalm it was bodily and painful; from the fourth, that it was accompanied by sleepless nights; from the third, that it was soul trouble, and overwhelmed his spirit; and from other verses, that it brought him to the border of despair, and led him to ask, "Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will He be favourable no more?" and other similar questions. By-and-bye he further discovered that making such petulant inquiries was an infirmity of his, and he found his mind drawn from such doleful repinings to a contemplation of God's sovereignty, in…
