The Crown Of Life
Here is a striking contrast made by James under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He speaks of the blessedness that leads to life and the waywardness that leads to death. He speaks of a single man, ‘blessed is the man that endureth temptation’ and ‘let no man say when he is tempted’. However, we may think of this man as every believer for we all are tried by affliction and tested by hardship. How shall we react? We all are tempted to sin by the lust of the flesh, which sin, but for God’s grace, ‘when it is finished, bringeth forth death’.

Love Your Enemy – Really?
As the Lord sat on the mountain side and delivered the lessons that would become known as the sermon on the mount I can only imagine a solemn, reflective demeanour settled upon His hearers. When He said, ‘love your enemies’, no doubt each of them pictured, in their mind’s eye, the ‘enemy’ they would find it hard, if not impossible, to love. When He said, ‘do good to them which hate you’, I feel sure each wondered how this was possible and marvelled what radical, sweeping teaching this was. The Jews were an occupied nation under Rome’s subjection. They had little love for their overlords who taxed and suppressed them.

Christ, The Wisdom Of God
James is speaking about wisdom and a believer’s longing for spiritual wisdom. Spiritual wisdom is the practical and experiential application of spiritual truth. Every believer seeks to know Christ better and to experience His grace more so as to deal better with the trials and challenges of life, what James calls ‘divers temptations’. Though they differ, person to person, we all feel these trials as members of Christ’s body. When the Holy Spirit quickens a dead sinner He creates spiritual life and initiates a process of spiritual development.
