The Resurrection And The Life
Lazarus was dead. He died, as all men die, because it is appointed so for these bodies as a result of sin and as a consequence of the Fall, ‘The wages of sin is death’. Our God says, ‘the soul that sinneth, it shall die’ and ‘sin, when it is finished bringeth forth death’. Yet there was something special about the death of Lazarus. While it followed the ordinary course of fallen nature it would be employed by the Lord Jesus to bless His church. The death of Lazarus, or rather his being raised from the dead by the Lord, would inspire the faith of the Lord’s disciples, sweeten the lives of those He loved and glorify Christ’s own name.

Delivered Up For Us All
In coming to the world to save sinners our Lord Jesus Christ was not spared humiliation, contradiction of sinners, cruel suffering or the loss of divine fellowship with His Father. He was given as our Substitute and delivered up in our behalf to bear our sins, endure our punishment and die in our place. Substitutionary atonement is a central gospel truth and the Lord Jesus died as our Substitute. The price of our salvation was paid by Christ and our Redeemer bore our grief and carried our sorrow in His own body on the tree.

I Am The Good Shepherd
Each one of the Lord’s seven ‘I Am’ sayings in John’s Gospel reveals aspects of the Saviour’s holy character and mediatorial work. As the Bread of Life He feeds and nourishes the souls of His people with spiritual food in the gospel. As the Light of the World He reveals divine truth, illuminates the kingdom of God, teaches God’s elect and dispels the darkness of sinful ignorance. As the Door He grants access into His Father’s presence by reconciling us to God. As the Door He also protects His sheep from their enemies.

The Faith He Once Destroyed
Saul of Tarsus was a formidable enemy of the church of Jesus Christ and of the doctrine of free grace. He despised Christ as the way of salvation and he cherished the law as a means of righteousness. When we first meet Saul he is debating and reasoning with the followers of Jesus. He was convinced they were merely simple, deceived fools whose convictions would soon evaporate under his searching arguments and the weight of centuries of Jewish tradition. The trouble was these disciples of Christ were slippery debaters and Saul soon learned to his shame that he was neither able to deny the wisdom of their testimony nor resist the Spirit by which they spoke.
